"The Walrus told me that one branch of this path would lead me to the Mad Hatter's house and that the other would take me to the den of the Jabberwock, a place I certainly don't want to go to. He said that you boys know the right path to take. He also warned me that one of you always tells the truth, and that the other one always lies. He also says that I can only ask of you one question." Alice then phrased her question in such a way that she was sure to get a correct answer regardless of which brother she asked. Can you figure out what question she put to the boys to get the right directions?
Alice asked, "If I had asked you yesterday, 'Which is the path that will lead me to the house of the Mad Hatter?' what would your answer have been?"
ReplyDeleteTo such a question the truthful brother would again give the correct answer. The untruthful brother, however, would have to tell a lie as to what he would have answered the day before which, at that time, would also have been a lie. So this offsetting lie would also have been the correct path to take. Well done, Alice!
