The World's Toughest "What Am I" Puzzle

Twice ten are six of us,
Six are but three of us,
Nine are but four of us;
   What can we possibly be?
Would you know more of us.
Twelve are but six of us,
Five are but four, do you see?

  1. The items in question are letters. In the first line twice ten is twenty, a word made up of six letters. In the word six there are three and in the word nine there are four, and so on with the remaining lines.
